AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Loverboy

Artist:Loverboy
Song:Working For The Weekend
Album:Classics

Though Working For The Weekend was not Loverboy's biggest chart hit, it may be their most memorable song. In the 80s, radio play became less significant with the rise of MTV. They had four consecutive multi platinum albums. Loverboy was formed in Calgary in 1979. Mike Reno was lead singer of Moxy. Paul Dean was lead guitarist of Streetheart. Moxy was based in Toronto and Streeheart was from Regina. Both guys wanted to live in Calgary. So they got together. Dean brought Streetheart drummer Matt Frenette. Other members were Doug Johnson on keyboards and April Wine bassist Jim Clench. Clench left and was replaced by Scott Smith. So they signed with Columbia Records Canada and worked with producer Bruce Fairbairn. Their 1980 debut album Loverboy and the first single Turn Me Loose did so well in Canada that Columbia released the album in the US. The album was certified 2XPlatinum. Their second album Get Lucky did even better and was certified 4XPlatinum. Working For The Weekend reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 but it was their biggest hit internationally. Their next two albums were also certified double platinum. Lovin' Every Minute Of It was their highest charting single at #9 in 1986. Things started to fall apart with the 1987 album Wildside. It did not perform as well as previous albums. Doug Johnson refused to appear in the video for Heaven In Your eyes from the film Top Gun because he felt it glorified war. He left and then Reno and Dean were squabbling over the poor sales of Wildside. Loverboy split up in 1988. You can get all their hits on this budget comp. Reno and Dean reunited for a 1991 benefit concert for Chilliwack's Brian MacLeod. Since then, Loverboy has been active and they continue to record and tour today. Scott Smith died in a 2000 boating accident. Loverboy was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 2009. Here's the video for Working For The Weekend by Loverboy.
