AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Ra Ra Riot

Artist:Ra Ra Riot
Song:Oh, La
Album:The Rhumb Line

One would think with a name like Ra Ra Riot that they would be a punk band. But the most interesting thing about Ra Ra Riot is they come with their own string section. Ra Ra Riot is from Syracuse, NY. The lead singer and keyboard player is Wes Miles. Other members are Milo Bonacci on guitar, Mathieu Santos on bass, John Pike on drums, Rebecca Zeller on violin and Alexandra Lawn on cello. They met in college in 2006 and then moved to New York and worked the club scene. But before they could really get going, tragedy struck when after a show on June 2, 2007 in Rhode Island, John Pike went missing. His body was found the next day. Ra Ra Riot announced they would continue and Kenny Bernard was the new drummer. After releasing an EP independently, Ra Ra Riot signed with V2 Records. They recorded their debut CD The Rhumb Line but V2 didn't like it. So they left and signed with Barsuk Records. The Rhumb Line was released Aug. 2008. Their second CD The Orchard was released Aug. 2010. They are a very good indie band and the strings are an asset. But it doesn't look like Ra Ra Riot will ever be a mainstream success. Alexandra Lawn left Ra Ra Riot in Feb. 2012 and will not be replaced. Their next CD Beta Love will be released Jan. 2013. It remains to be seen if Ra Ra Riot will still be interesting without the cello. Here's a video for Oh, La by Ra Ra Riot. This was taped in the attic of an old house in Syracuse.
