AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Father John Misty

Artist:Father John Misty
Song:Hollywood Forever Cemetary Sings
Album:Fear Fun

Father John Misty may seem like a new group but it's actually a new pseudonym for singer songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has been recording since 2004 and was also a member of the very popular group Fleet Foxes. Father John Misty reflects a change of direction. He was born May 3, 1981 in Baltimore and grew up in a Christian household. He was interested in being a pastor before he got into music as a teen. Tillman moved to Seattle and worked in a bakery while he worked on his music. Singer songwriter Damien Jurado heard one of his demos and took Tillman on tour. They toured with Richard Buckner. Tillman recorded a couple of CDs that he would sell at shows. Then he recorded as J. Tillman for Fargo Recordings and Yer Bird. At the time he was compared favourably to Nick Drake. in 2008, he became drummer for Fleet Foxes and was on their best selling CD Helplessness Blues. He continued to release solo CDs. Tillman left Fleet Foxes Jan. 2012. He says his contribution to the group was minimal. He just learned the drum parts. He has returned with the new name Father John Misty and the CD Fear Fun was released May 2012. The name change was because as J. Tillman he was perceived as a obscure but respected songwriter like Nick Drake, Townes Van Zandt or Gram Parsons. He admired those guys as a teen. So Tillman changed his name as a fresh start so he could be perceived differently. He signed with the excellent indie label Sub Pop. The name Father John Misty is meaningless. He says he needed a new name to confuse people. I don't think it will make any difference. Those who liked him before will still like him. Tillman is currently on tour and he is playing Toronto next week. Here's the video for Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings by Father John Misty. The girl in the video is Aubrey Plaza of the TV series Parks and Recreation.
