Singer songwriter Duncan Sheik had his only big chart hit with Barely Breathing in 1996. In recent years he has turned to writing Broadway musicals and won Tonys for his 2006 musical Spring Awakening. He was born Nov. 18, 1969 in Montclair, NJ and was raised by his grandparents in Hilton Head, SC. His grandmother trained at Julliard and taught him piano. After studying at Brown University in Rhode Island, he moved to Daly City, CA and in 1993 and worked with Liz and Lisa featuring Lisa Loeb and the band His Boy Elroy. He signed with Immortal Records and recorded his debut album with veteran British producer Rupert Hine. Atlantic heard the album and bought his contract from Immortal. Barely Breathing reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It stayed on the chart for 55 weeks. Sheik won a BMI Award for Most Played Song of 1997 and was nominated for a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy. The album Duncan Sheik was certified Gold. Sheik was unable to repeat this success with subsequent albums and he left Atlantic in 2002. This budget comp covers his Atlantic recordings. He also recorded for Rounder/Zoe and RCA and released his latest CD Covers 80 on MRI Records in 2011. He cancelled a planned tour when he went into rehab for alcohol addiction. Sheik wrote the music for the 2006 Broadway musical Spring Awakening and won Tonys for Best Orchestration and Best Original Music. The Original Cast CD won a Grammy. He is currently working on a film adaptation with director McG. He is also working on a musical adaptation of American Psycho that is supposed to premiere on Broadway in 2013.
