Mika Nagano wins JEWELS Lightweight Championship shot

When JEWELS announced the main event of Mika Nagano vs Emi Tomimatsu for today's show at Shin-kiba 1st Ring, they said it was for a shot at Ayaka Hamasaki's Lightweight Championship. I think most would agree that neither is a threat to Hamasaki. What might surprise you is that this fight was for the most part a slugfest. Nagano got the best of it and won by unanimous decision. This is Nagano's third straight win. I don't know if it will lead to a title shot but maybe they forgot about that. in the semi main, Celine dropped to 48kg to face JEWELS Featherweight Champion Sugi Rock. As we saw in her match in Invicta, Sugi Rock needs to work on handling opponents who are taller than her. The first round was fairly even but Celine picked up the pace in round two and won by unanimous decision. Because of Celine's record, some might look at this as an upset. But maybe she should have been fighting at 48kg all along. I thought she had a good chance to win. JEWELS brought two Korean kickboxers over and not surprisingly, they both got clobbered. Shizuka Sugiyama beat Kim Eun Sung by TKO at 1:01 of round one. MIZUKI beat Jung Ye Seo with a rear naked choke at 1:43 of round one. This does nothing for either fighter especially Sugiyama who needs better competition to show that she won't fold like she did a couple of years ago. JEWELS owner Yuichi Ozono announced that MIZUKI will fight in Invicta this summer. Takumi Umehara won her MMA debut over JEWELS matchmaker Yasuko Mogi by unanimous decision. And Mina Kurobe remains undefeated with a win over Tomo Maesawa by rear naked choke at 1:49 of round one. The rest of the show was kickboxing filler. But I did want to mention that Megumi Sugimoto won a grappling match. She trains at AACC and you always want to watch for new Megumi Fujji trainees. She should make her pro MMA debut on the next JEWELS show.
