AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Marion

Artist:Marion
Song:Sleep
Album:100 Hits: Rock Anthems

Marion burst onto the British music scene in the mid-90s earning favourable comparisons to The Smiths. They had some success especially with the single Sleep. But conflict in the band led to their demise in 1999. They have reformed twice and they released a live CD last year. Marion are from Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. Lead singer Jaime Harding and guitarist Phil Cunningham were school chums. Along with guitarist Tony Grantham, they were the core of Marion. After personnel changes, Nick Gilbert was on bass and Murad Mousa was on drums. The band was named after Harding's grandmother. After appearing on the BBC TV special Britpop Now, Marion signed with London Records. Their debut CD This World And Body was released in 1996 and the single Sleep was used in a Citroen commercial. It reached #17 on the British charts. Marion was compared favourably to The Smiths and were thought to have a bright future. Johnny Marr of The Smiths produced Marion's 1998 CD The Program. But there was friction within the band and London wasn't happy with them. Marion was dropped and they split up in 1999. Harding attempted to record solo but nothing was released. Cunningham and Grantham played in various bands. Marion reformed in 2006 and played some gigs. But Harding got sick and required open heart surgery. By 2011, he had recovered sufficiently that Marion could reform again. They released the CD Alive In Manchester and toured England. I noticed that Harding has been performing solo so maybe Marion has split up again. You can get Sleep on this 5CD various artists budget comp from Demon Music Group. Here's the video for Sleep by Marion.
