AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Ben Howard

Artist:Ben Howard
Song:Keep Your Head Up
Album:Every Kingdom

Ben Howard's debut CD Every Kingdom has done well in his native England. He is making progress in North America. Keep Your Head Up was used in the hit film Safe Haven. He was born Apr. 24, 1987 in London. He grew up listening to his mother's collection of folk music records. He got into surfing at age 11 and his family moved to Devon so he could go to the beach. He wrote for a surfing magazine. Shades of Jack Johnson. But he was able to work on his music playing for audiences in the surfing community. By 2008, he became a full time musician. He sounds a lot like legendary British folksinger John Martyn. He released a couple of EPs independently and signed with Island Records. Every Kingdom is his 2011 debut CD. It reached #4 on the British Album chart and some of his songs got radio play including Keep Your Head Up. The CD was nominated for The Mercury Prize. Howard won two 2013 BRIT Awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Solo Male Artist. He released The Burgh Island EP in Oct. 2012. So now Island has to figure out how to sell him in the US. Put one of his songs in a movie. Keep Your Head Up appeared on the soundtrack of Safe Haven. It was directed by Lasse Hallstrom and is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks who also wrote The Notebook. The stars are Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. So the film is clearly aimed at women. And though it was slammed by critics, it grossed $91M so it did well. So the hope is fans of the film will become Ben Howard fans when they hear him on the soundtrack. Ben Howard is currently touring England and he seems to have a bright future. Here's the video for Keep Your Head Up by Ben Howard.
