Artist:Bill Anderson f/Mary Lou Turner
Song:Sometimes
Album:The Definitive Collection

Bill Anderson has had a total of seven number one country hits. Sometimes was the last of those number one hits in 1976. He is also a long time TV host at the Grand Ole Opry. Because of his singing style and use of spoken word segments in his music, he is known as Whispering Bill. He was born Nov. 1, 1937 in Columbia, SC but he grew up in the Atlanta area. Anderson studied journalism at the University of Georgia. He wanted to be a sportswriter. He also dabbled in songwriting. When one of his songs City Lights topped the country charts for Ray Price in 1958, Anderson moved to Nashville and signed with Decca Records. His first number one country hit was Mama Sang A Song in 1962. The 1963 hit Still not only topped the country chart but it reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is his signature song. At the same time, Anderson had a lot of success writing songs for others. His song Once A Day was a number one country hit for Connie Smith in 1964. One of Anderson's number one hits was a duet with Jan Howard called For Loving You in 1967. He last recorded with Jan in 1971. In 1976 he found a new duet partner in Mary Lou Turner and Sometimes was Anderson's final number one country hit. Turner didn't have much of a career. She recorded a few singles and her only album was a duet album with Anderson. You can get all of Anderson's hits on this comp. By 1982, Anderson stopped recording and became a TV host. He co-hosted the ABC game show The Better Sex with Sarah Purcell and hosted the TNN country music trivia game show Fandango. He also hosted the Grand Ole Opry interview show Opry Backstage. Anderson's songs continue to be recorded by guys like Mark Willis, Steve Warriner, Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney. George Strait won the 2006 ACM Song Of The Year for the Anderson song Give It Away. Anderson was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2001. Bill Anderson still records occasionally. He currently hosts the Sirius XM interview show Bill Anderson Visits With The Legends and hosts the RFD-TV series Country's Family Reunion.
