R & B singer songwriter Bruno Mars was an overnight sensation when his 2010 debut single Just The Way You Are topped the charts. He is currently one of the most popular recording artists in the world. Of course he seemed like an overnight sensation but he had already had success as a songwriter and producer. Nothing is ever that simple. He was born Peter Gene Hernandez Oct. 8, 1985 in Honolulu. His parents are performers and his uncle is an Elvis impersonator. His dad nicknamed him Bruno because he thought Mars looked like legendary pro wrestler Bruno Sammartino. As a child, Mars performed with his family and became known as Little Elvis because of his Elvis impersonation. After graduating high school in 2003, Mars moved to Los Angeles to get into the music business. He took the name Bruno Mars because girls used to say he was out of this world. Well, that's what he says. Mars signed with Motown in 2004 but they dropped him within a year. Nothing came of it except Mars met Philip Lawrence and the two have worked together as The Smeezingtons ever since. They have written and produced songs for Adam Levine, Brandy, Sean Kingston and the Flo Rida hit Right Round. Mars signed with Atlantic Records in 2009 and was the featured vocalist on songs by B.o.B. and Travie McCoy. Just The Way You Are was the first single from his 2010 debut CD Doo-Wops & Hooligans. The song topped the charts worldwide. There's your overnight sensation. Mars says the song was heavily influenced by classic love songs like Billy Preston's You Are So Beautiful. The song was written and produced by The Smeezingtons along with Cassius D. Kalb (Khalil Walton) and Needlz (Khari Cain). Cain toured with Mars for a while. Mars also had a number one hit with Grenade and Doo-Wops & Hooligans was certified 2XPlatinum. Mars' second CD Unorthodox Jukebox has also done well and Locked Out Of Heaven and When I Was Your Man both topped the Billboard Hot 100. He has won a bunch of awards including a Best Male Vocal Performance Grammy for Just The Way You Are. Mars started a world tour in June that will run until March 2014.
