AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Stanley Jordan

Artist:Stanley Jordan
Song:Flying Home
Album:The Best Of Stanley Jordan

Guitarist Stanley Jordan had a lot of success in the 80s. He was the first act signed to Blue Note Records when legendary record executive Bruce Lundvall took over the label in 1984 and Jordan was a jazz chart topper for a few years. He was born July 31, 1959 in Chicago. He studied piano as a child and played guitar in bands as a teen. He earned a BA in music at Princeton in 1981 and studied composition with the great Milton Babbit. After releasing an album independently in 1982, Jordan signed with Blue Note in 1985. Jordan brought new technique to the guitar called The Touch Technique or two handed tapping. He taps the fret so it vibrates enough to make a sound. This technique gave Jordan a different sound and it made him a best selling jazz artist. His 1988 album Flying Home was mostly a solo album with bass and drums and the use of drum machines. This comp is a good intro to his music. Though Jordan hasn't had the same chart success in recent years, he still tours the jazz festival circuit and currently records for Mack Avenue Records. His latest CD Friends was released in 2011. Most jazz fans should be aware of Jordan though he may not be jazz enough for some fans. Here's Stanley Jordan performing Flying Home at the Blue Note in New York City.
