AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Player

Artist:Player
Song:Baby Come Back
Album:Baby Come Back: The Best Of Player

Baby Come Back topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1978. Though Player is perceived as a one hit wonder, they had a second hit from their debut album. So they had a decent run in the late 70s and split up in 1983. Lead singer and guitarist Peter Beckett is a Brit who moved to Los Angeles in 1974. He was in Skyband with Steve Kipner from the Aussie band Tin Tin. When Skyband split up, Beckett met keyboard player JC Crowley at a party and formed Riff Raff which became Bandana. Kipner was also in that band along with former Grass Roots guitarist Reed Kailing. Bandana recorded a single for Haven Records, a label owned by the songwriting and production team of Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter. Kipner and Kailing left and Haven closed. The band was renamed Player and added bassist Ronn Moss, drummer John Friesen and keyboard player Wayne Cook. Lambert and Potter signed Player to RSO Records and produced their 1977 debut album. Baby Come Back was the debut single. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in early 1978. This Time I'm In It For Love was Player's other top ten hit. The band toured and was named Billboard's Best New Singles Artist for 1978. Cook was replaced by Bob Carpenter. They recorded a second album. But then they had a big argument while on tour. Beckett left and Player lost their record deal. And then Crowley left to go home to Texas. Beckett returned and Player recorded albums for Casablanca and RCA. Ronn Moss left in 1982 to become an actor. He was in the cast of the daytime soap The Bold and the Beautiful from 1987 to 2012. Player split up in 1983. This budget comp has all their hits. Crowley moved to Nashville and recorded an album in 1988 and has had success as a songwriter. Beckett was in The Little River Band from 1989 to 1997. Since 1995, Beckett and Moss have occasionally reformed Player. They released a new CD Feb. 2013. Here's the video for Baby Come Back by Player.
