Ne-Yo has been one of the most successful R & B artists over the last decade. Because Of You was a top five hit in 2007. He is also a very successful songwriter and producer. And he has done acting and is now an executive at Motown. He tries to do so much it makes me wonder if he's spreading himself too thin. There is no question he is very talented. He was born Shaffer Chimere Smith Oct. 18, 1982 in Camden, AR and he grew up in Las Vegas. His stage name was GoGo when he was a member of the group Envy. When they split up in 2000, Ne-Yo signed with Columbia Records. The name Ne-Yo was given to him by a producer who thought Ne-Yo sees music as Neo sees The Matrix. He recorded an album at Columbia but it was never released. Then they dropped him. But Marques Houston heard his song That Girl and released it as a single in 2003. So Ne-Yo continued writing and producing for others including Teedra Moses, Cristina Milian and Youngstown. When his song Let Me Love You was a number one hit for Mario, Ne-Yo was approached by Def Jam and signed in 2005. His 2006 debut CD In My Own Words was released in 2006. It topped the Billboard 200 and the single So Sick topped the Billboard Hot 100. His second album Because Of You did just as well and the single Because Of You reached #2 on the Billbhoard Hot 100 in 2007. Ne-Yo works a lot with the Norwegian duo Stargate. They are Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen. They had success in England producing S Club and Hear'Say before they moved to New York and met Ne-Yo. These three guys wrote and produced So Sick and Because Of You. Ne-Yo continued to have success not only with his own music but as a writer and producer for other artists. And he has acted in movies and TV. When his 2010 CD Libra Scale sagged a bit in sales, Ne-Yo left Def Jam for Motown where he is Senior Vice President of A & R. He released his first Motown CD R.E.D. Sept. 2012. It did OK but but as well as his earlier albums. So he still has work to do to get back to where he was. He'll be fine. Here's the video for Because Of You by Ne-Yo.
