AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Dishwalla

Artist:Dishwalla
Song:Counting Blue Cars
Album:Pet Your Friends

The alt rock classic Counting Blue Cars was the only chart hit for Dishwalla in 1995. It shows that if you write a song with a good hook you had better write more songs with good hooks or you won't last. Dishwalla was formed in Santa Barbara, CA in 1993. J.R. Richards was lead singer and main songwriter. Other members were Rodney Browning Cravens on guitar, Scot Alexander on bass and George Pendergast on drums. Dishwalla is a Hindi cable TV term that Browning says was found in Wired Magazine. Dishwalla signed with A & M Records and appeared on the 1994 Carpenters tribute CD IF I Were A Carpenter. Their self produced debut CD Pet Your Friends was released in 1995. I think the album cover was memorable. It was from the Aug. 23, 1948 cover of Life Magazine. Counting Blue Cars was the first single and it reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also appeared in the film Empire Records. Today the song is considered an alt rock classic and Pet Your Friends is available as a budget CD. Despite A & M's attempts to promote Dishwalla, they never charted on the Billboard Hot 100 again. They recorded two albums for A & M and then J.R. Richards left to go solo. He returned and after the 2002 CD Opaline, he was permanently replaced by Justin Fox. Dishwalla still tours today. Here's the video for Counting Blue Cars by Dishwalla.
