AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Christopher Durang

Artist:Christopher Durang
Song:I Could Drive A Person Crazy
Album:Sondheim: Putting It Together: Original Cast Recording

Those familiar with the work of award winning playwright Christopher Durang might be surprised that he has acted occasionally and co-starred in the 1993 off-Broadway musical Sondheim: Putting It Together. Durang was born Jan. 2, 1949 in Montclair, NJ. He has a BA in English from Harvard and an MFA in playwriting from Yale. He grew up Roman Catholic and is gay so many of his plays focus on those subjects. Probably his biggest success in the 80s was the play Beyond Therapy which was turned into a 1987 film by Robert Altman. Durang has also occasionally appeared on stage and in films like Secret of My Success and HouseSitter. Putting It Together is a Stephen Sondheim's Greatest Hits show. Side By Side By Sondheim was a 1976 Greatest Hits show. Sondheim resisted doing a second Greatest Hits show despite fan requests. Producer Cameron Mackintosh finally convinced Sondheim to do it. The show was first produced in England and then moved to New York in 1993. The big deal was Julie Andrews' return to the New York stage for the first time in 30 years. Other stars included Stephen Collins, Christopher Durang, Michael Rupert and Rachel York. The show has a plot about two married couples and Durang plays the narrator. But the plot is just a device for songs from various Sondheim shows. I Could Drive A Person Crazy is from Company. The show only ran for a couple of months but I think it was supposed to be a short run. The original cast is available on 2CDs. Putting It Together returned to New York in 1998 starring Carol Burnett. Christopher Durang acted in films and TV in the 90s. But lately he has concentrated on writing. He won a 2013 Best Play Tony award for Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike. Here's a video for I Could Drive A Person Crazy by Cristopher Durang.
