British singer songwriter Chris de Burgh had his biggest hit with his signature song Lady In Red in 1986. For some reason he has always been a bigger draw in the US than in England. He was born Christopher John Davison Oct. 15, 1948 in Venado Tuerto, Argentina. His father was a British diplomat so the family moved around a lot. de Burgh is his mother's maiden name. They settled in an Irish castle owned by his mom's family. They turned it into a hotel and young Chris sang for guests. After college, de Burgh signed with A & M Records in 1974 and toured with Supertramp. But he had problems establishing himself. The 1982 single Don't Pay The Ferryman was the first to chart in the US and England. Lady In Red was his breakthrough hit in 1986. It topped the British charts and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album Into The Light was certified Gold. The song is about what his wife Diane was wearing the first time he met her. Many fans mistakenly assume the song was in the film The Lady In Red. It wasn't in that film but it did appear in the 1988 film Working Girl starring Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith. Though de Burgh never had another big hit single, the success of Lady In Red was enough to sustain his career over the years.
