Sometimes in the music business, a performer can be too similar to another performer to find success. Sunny Sweeney is a country singer songwriter who is thought to be way too similar to Miranda Lambert. So her record company didn't promote her all that well and then they parted ways. She was born Dec. 7, 1976 in Longview, TX. After graduating high school, she moved to New York to pursue a career on Broadway. When that didn't work out, she moved back to Texas and earned a public relations degree at Southwest Texas State in Austin. Then she started playing local clubs. She released the CD Heartbreaker's Hall Of Fame independently and this led to a contract with Big Machine Records. Big Machine released the CD Mar. 2007. Then Big Machine merged with Universal to become Republic Nashville. Sunny moved to Republic. The CD Concrete was released Aug. 2011 and it was produced by Dierks Bentley's producer Brett Beavers. The album did OK and three singles charted. But she just never broke through. She's a good singer. She's attractive and she writes her own songs. What's not to like? The only criticism was that she is too similar to the very successful Miranda Lambert. Sunny wrote Staying's Worse Than Leaving with Radney Foster of Foster & Lloyd and Jay Clementi of the Josh Abbott Band. These two have written hits for Dierks Bentley. I can only speculate what might have been said in the Republic Nashville boardroom but the end result was that Sunny left the label. She has started her own label Aunt Daddy Records distributed by Three Tigers Records. Her CD Provoked will be released in August. She raised money to produce the CD through fan funded Kickstarter. We're seeing this when artists get the cold shoulder from major labels and fans want the music out there. I think Sunny will do OK but she'll never be a big star.
