AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Sofia Rei Koutsovitis

Artist:Sofia Rei Koutsovitis
Song:Instante De Vos
Album:Sube Azul

Though jazz singer Sofia Rei Koutsovitis is from Argentina and sings mostly in Spanish, she has lived in the US since 2001 and is currently a regular on the New York jazz scene. Sofia studied classical voice as a child and then moved to Boston in 2001 to train at the New England Conservatory of Music under jazz musicians like Danilo Perez, Steve Lacy and Bob Moses. Sofia earned a Master's Degree and is currently on the faculty of NECM, Berklee and the New York Jazz Academy. Since graduating, Sofia has been a regular on the New York jazz club circuit and and also tours jazz festival sometimes as a leader but also as a featured vocalist. She toured with the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. She is a member of John Zorn's Song Project and also Geoffrey Keezer's band. Sofia has recorded three solo albums. Sube Azul is her second CD and it was released in 2009. Keezer is the main pianist on the album. But other musicians include Argentine pianist Leo Genovese who normally works with Esperanza Spalding, Anat Cohen on clarinet and Dan Blake on soprano sax. Sofia sings mostly in Spanish but she also sings in English and Portuguese. On her 2012 CD De Tierra y Oro, she shortened her name to Sofia Rei. But the music is the same and all her CDs have been arranged by bassist Jorge Roeder. She's a great singer and has an exotic look and sound. Jazz fans should check out Sofia Rei Koutsovitis. Here's Sofia Rei Koutsovitis performing Instante De Vos at the Heckscher Theater in New York City June 12, 2008. The musicians are not identified but I think Dan Blake plays the sax solo.
