Most music fans should be familiar with John Parr's smash hit Man In Motion from the 1985 film St. Elmo's Fire which I did as song of the day a couple of years ago. But did you know that composer and producer David Foster's Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire was a top 20 hit? That's how hot the movie was. Of course Foster is a record producer who occasionally records his own albums. He was born Nov. 1, 1949 in Victoria, BC. As a teen he played with Chuck Berry and then Ronnie Hawkins. In 1974, Foster moved with his band Skylark to Los Angeles. They scored a top ten hit with Wildflower. Then he got into the Los Angeles studio scene. He formed Airplay with legendary studio guitar whiz Jay Graydon and he played on George Harrison albums. Foster played and also was an arranger on the 1979 Earth, Wind & Fire album I Am. He co-wrote After The Love Has Gone with Graydon and Bill Champlin and it won a Best R & B Song Grammy. Probably Foster's biggest success in the early 80s was turning Chicago from a faded jazz rock band into a pop music powerhouse. He co-wrote many of Chicago's hits with Peter Cetera. In 1985, Foster was hired to compose the score for the film St. Elmo's Fire. Not only was the film successful, so was the soundtrack. Of course Man In Motion topped the charts and Foster's Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. On the soundtrack album, there is also a vocal version of the Love Theme featuring Amy Holland and Donny Gerrard. Session musician David Boruff played the sax solo. Foster's session musician buddies like Graydon, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Jerry Hey played on the soundtrack. The Love Theme also appeared on Foster's 1986 album David Foster with guest appearances by Olivia Newton-John, David Page and Lee Ritenour. Both of those albums are available on CD. But I suggest this comp from WEA Europe featuring appearances by Peter Cetera, Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, The Manhattan Transfer, James Ingram and Gordon Lightfoot. Foster also scored the 1993 film The Bodyguard. Then he produced The Corrs on his own label and also wrote the theme for the 1996 Olympics. In recent years, Foster has worked a lot with blind opera singer Andrea Bocelli. His latest CD as a producer was Ruben Studdard's 2014 CD Unconditional Love.
