AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Roots

Artist:The Roots f/Maimouna Youssef
Song:Don't Feel Right
Album:Game Theory

The Roots have been around since the late 80s with their mix of R & B and hip hop. The various members are probably better known for producing music for other artists. And they have been the house band for Jimmy Fallon since 2009. The Roots are from Philadelphia led by drummer Amir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter who does most of the rapping. They started out playing in the streets of Philadelphia as The Square Roots but for legal reason that was shortened to The Roots. They released an album independently and that got them a record deal with Geffen Records. Their debut CD Do You Want More was released in 1994. The Roots use a lot of guest singers on their albums. Also, a lot of musicians have come and gone from The Roots but Thompson and Trotter have been a constant presence. Probably The Roots biggest hit single was You Got Me in 1999. But they've never had a big hit single and they've never even had a top ten R & B hit. But their albums sell well. For the 2006 CD Game Theory, The Roots moved to DefJam. Thompson has described the album as dark and more mature than previous albums. Don't Feel Right was the single. The female singer sounds like Lauryn Hill but it is actually Maimouna Youssef who seems to be unknown other than this song. It's available as a budget CD. The Roots' latest CD ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin was released last year. But these days they are mainly known as the house band for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and they have worked for him since 2009. Here's the video for Don't Feel Right by The Roots featuring Maimouna Youssef.
