AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Dynamics

Artist:The Dynamics
Song:Funky Key
Album:What A Shame

The Dynamics were a funk and soul group from Detroit who had success on the R & B charts but they weren't quite able to break through. They started out releasing a few singles in the early 60s. By the late 60s, they were managed by Aretha Franklin's husband Ted White and he got The Dynamics a deal with Atlantic's Cotillion label. They recorded the 1969 album First Landing at Stax in Memphis. The single Ice Cream Cone charted but the album didn't sell well enough to keep them on the label and Cotillion dropped them. By this time, The Dynamics are Zeke Harris, George White, Fred Baker and Samuel Stevenson. They signed with Black Gold Records which was owned by the budget label Pickwick. The 1973 album What A Shame was produced and written by Ronnie Shannon. He is best known for writing the Aretha Franklin hits Baby I Love You and I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You). Motown veteran Paul Riser wrote the arrangements. Funky Key was the first single and it and a couple of other singles charted in R & B. But it wasn't enough to keep Black Gold going and Pickwick closed the label. Today Funky Key is considered to be a lost funk classic. Fortunately Unidisc has released What A Shame on CD. They are based in Montreal and they specialize in re-releasing dance music classics on CD. And that was it for The Dynamics. They just didn't quite make it but soul and funk fans should check them out. Here's a video for Funky Key by The Dynamics.
