AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Christian McBride Trio

Artist:Christian McBride Trio
Song:Hallelujah Time
Album:Out Here

Bassist Christian McBride has been one of the most versatile jazz musicians in recent years. He has recorded everything from fusion to big band music. When he signed with Mack Avenue Records in 2013, he decided to return to a basic trio after recording the 2011 big band album Good Feeling. He also led the larger band Inside Straight. One of the musician who was on both of those recordings was drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. He got into the New York jazz scene while studying at Juilliard. He was in Ted Nash's big band and he recorded and toured with singer Kurt Elling. He had worked on a couple of McBride's albums and was a natural choice for McBride's new trio. Pianist Christian Sands was a protege of Billy Taylor. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music and he was in the school's Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra led by Bobby Sanabria. After graduation, Sands joined Inside Straight and McBride already knew him when he decided to turn that band into a trio. The 2013 CD Out Here is their first album. They record mostly standards including the Oscar Peterson standard Hallelujah Time best known for the 1964 recording by Woody Herman. They continue to tour and the live CD Live At The Village Vanguard was released last year. They are coming to Koerner Hall in Toronto in 2017 and I will be there. All three record as sideman. McBride has been on recent albums by Diana Krall and Angelique Kidjo. Sands appeared on bassist Ben Williams' latest album. And Owens continues to work with trombonist Michael Dease. Here's Christian McBride Trio performing Hallelujah Time at the Jazz Standard in New York 2013.
