AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Tag Team

Artist:Tag Team
Song:Whoomp! (There It Is)
Album:ABC Monday Night Football Jamz

Here's a record that was one of the biggest hits of 1993 and a big party and sports anthem. The Green Bay Packers and The New York Yankees have used it extensively. But it was also a one hit wonder that bankrupted its record company. The two guys behind Tag Team went to high school together in Denver. There was Cecil Glenn AKA DC The Brain Supreme and Steve Gibson AKA Steve Roll'n. Both guys became DJs and moved to Atlanta. Whoomp! (There It Is) was based on the 1980 disco hit I'm Ready by the Italian group Kano and the song Whoot, There It Is by the Miami group 95 South. The phrase Whoomp! (There It Is) comes from Florida strippers working in Atlanta. Of course the record was a huge hit. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it also became a big sports anthem. The song is on this Monday Night Football CD. Tag Team were everywhere for a while. But afterwards Tag Team's label Bellmark owned by former Stax exec Al Bell was sued by Kano for an illegally used sample and that forced Bellmark into bankruptcy. And that was the end of Tag Team. They recorded two albums and they were officially a one hit wonder. Glenn went back to DJing. But Gibson got into selling drugs and that landed him in jail. They made some money when Will Ferrell used Whoomp! (There It Is) in the 2003 film Elf. Then more recently someone at Gawker thought he saw President Barack Obama in the video. It was actually a rapper named LA Sno. So the song still makes Tag Team a few bucks once in a while. It's better to be a one hit wonder than a no hit wonder. Here's the video for Whoomp! (There It Is) by Tag Team. Thanks to Denver's 5280 Magazine for the info about Tag Team.
